your data
Privacy policy
Guess the Word collects as little data as possible: you can play without an account, and no data is sold. This page explains what is kept, why, and how to exercise your rights.
Data controller
Alexandre Vasseur, sole trader (entrepreneur individuel) trading as Alvatech, 89 rue Jean-Baptiste Lebas, Apt. 33, 59170 Croix, France — alexandre@alvatech.fr.
What stays in your browser
The game saves in your browser's local storage (localStorage) today's guesses, your username and tag if you've logged in, and a few display preferences. This information doesn't leave your device, except when you play (see below); you can erase it at any time by clearing the site's data in your browser.
What is sent to the server
- Your guesses, to compute their score. They aren't stored with your identity; only the number of players who found the word of the day is counted.
- Your account, if you create one: username, tag and the dates of the words you found, for the leaderboard and your streak. Legal basis: performance of the service you request. Retention: as long as the account exists.
- Finished multiplayer games: display name, ranking, number of guesses and best score of each player, for the results and the game's statistics.
- Server technical logs (IP address, requested page, date), kept for a limited time to keep the site secure and working properly. Legal basis: legitimate interest.
This data is hosted in the European Union by Contabo GmbH (Germany), on a server run by the publisher.
Audience measurement
The site uses Umami, an analytics tool hosted on the same server, which sets no cookies and doesn't track visitors from one site to another. It produces overall statistics (page views, country, device type) without identifying anyone.
Advertising
The site may show ads provided by Google AdSense (Google Ireland Limited). Google and its partners may then use cookies or identifiers to serve ads, limit how often you see them, measure their performance and, if you agree, personalize them based on your interests.
Where the law requires your consent (notably in Europe, the United Kingdom and Switzerland), a consent banner managed by Google lets you accept or refuse these uses on your first visit; you can change your choice at any time from the link provided by that banner. If you refuse, non-personalized ads may still be shown. To learn more: how Google uses information from sites that use its services and Google ad settings.
Your rights
Under the GDPR, you can access your data, have it corrected or deleted, object to its processing or ask for it in a portable format. Write to alexandre@alvatech.fr with your name#tag. If you believe your rights aren't being respected, you can file a complaint with the CNIL, the French data protection authority.
